Shopping Centers in Durban, South Africa

One of the top shopping centers in Durban is the Gateway Mall, which has a reputation as the largest mall in the southern hemisphere. There, visitors can find dozens of restaurants, a supermarket and various independent shops. A wavepool and a climbing wall offer additional sources of entertainment.

Another popular shopping center, the Pavilion, sees nearly two million shoppers on a monthly basis. This is where locals and tourists alike go to purchase phones, jewelry and clothing.

Street Markets in Durban, South Africa

For visitors who prefer to do their shopping in a slightly different manner, there are dozens of street markets in Durban. Some of the best shopping markets are part of the Victoria Street Market, which is along Russell Street. Here, haggling for the best price is a common practice. With more than 170 stalls to choose from, the options are nearly limitless. Visitors can purchase foods, traditional spices, toys, clothing, jewelry, crafts and fabrics.

Though its not technically a street market, the Workshop is a Victorian-style building that houses more than 100 specialty shops, including Durban's largest selection of African curio shops. Here, visitors can choose from a variety of stalls that sell everything from expensive clothing to fast-food restaurants. Like the Gateway Mall, it also offers different entertainment options. Much of it is tax-free and those who need a little help can receive it at Workshop's information desk.

Durban also holds beachfront vendors, which are great for bartering. However, prices can still be steep and pickpocketing is a common problem.
